Gujarati Dal

Earlier also i have posted many dal recipes like Jhatpat dal and dal makhani but these take time to be prepared. So heres a easily made dal which involves so technique in particular and can be made a by beginner as well. Its lightly spiced and a little sweet in taste so a excellent food for kids as well. With some fried papads and curd on the side this makes a excellent dinner.
   Toor dal is a highly nutritious dal rich in protein and also has Vitamin A and C. Easily disgested makes it a  recommended food for aged people as well.

Ingredients Required:-


  • 1 cup of tuvar(toor) dal(arhar dal)
  • 2 tspn of turmeric powder(haldi)
  • 1-2 tspn of tamarind pulp or kokum juice
  • 2-3 tspn of grated jaggery
  • 2 tspn ginger paste preferably fresh
  • 1 tspn of Asfoetida(hing)
  • 1 tspn of Cumin seeds( jeera)
  • 1 tspn of mustard seeds( rai)
  • 1-2 green chillies finely chopped
  • 2-4 tspn of refined oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander to garnish
Procedure to make:-
  • Wash the toor dal and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
  • In a saucepan pour the pressure cooked dal and mash it properly using a masher or a hand blender.
  • Add a glass of water and turmeric and boil it.
  • Add tamarind pulp dissolved in water along with jaggery.
  • Now in a tadka pan and add oil and after it gets heated add cumin,mustard, hing. 
  • After the Cumin and mustard splutters add the ginger paste and saute it.
  • Add this tadka to the dal and mix well.
  • Add salt as per taste and garnish with coriander.

Toor Dal

Serve hot with steaming hot rice.
P.S. I just love eating this dal in a bowl along with some Sev and mixture.
