Hagalkai is karela( Bitter gourd) and sasme/sasve is a preparation made using curd and main ingredients ( in this case Bitter gourd) is stir fried and mixed with curd,grated/scraped coconut and mixed with minimum spices and eaten with hot rice. Sasve/sasme is one of main dishes cooked in Havyaka household. Earlier i had posted recipe of Basale soppu sasme which you will find Here Bitter gourd sasve is most important dish prepared during festive days as it is considered to act as digestive as well a dish which will balance the effect of sweet dishes and other heavy food eaten. 

Ingredient Required:-

  • 2 medium sized bitter gourd finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of grated/scraped coconut
  • 2 cups of thick yogurt ( dahi)
  • 2 tspn of coconut oil
  • 2 green chillies finely chopped
  • 4 tspn of mustard seeds
  • 2 tspn of urad dal
  • 1 tspn of turmeric powder
  • 1-2 red chilly broken into two
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tspn of sugar or jaggery
Procedure to make:-

  • Heat coconut oil in a saucepan and once its heated add 2 mustard seeds,1 urad dal ,turmeric powder and red chilly and saute.
  • Once mustard seeds splutters,add the finely chopped bitter gourd and fry for 15-20 mins till crisp.
  • Keep sauting regularly to prevent from burning and sticking to the pan.
  • Turn off the heat and let it cool.
  • In a bowl whisk curd with salt and keep aside.
  • In a blender blend together coconut-mustard seeds and urad dal. Mix this into into the whisked curd.
  • Add sugar/jaggery and mix well.
  • Add the cool stir fried bitter gourd. Mix well.
  • Serve with hot steamed rice.
